Christmas 2025 sake recommendations

December 6, 2025

Christmas is finally approaching and so here’s our Christmas 2025 sake recommendations!

Sake offers unexpected gastronomic experiences when paired with traditional Christmas dishes. Here are four sake recommendations that would pair excellently with your festive foods, from Christmas party bites through to savoury main dishes like roast turkey and pigs in blankets to desserts like homemade minced pies.

Yauemon “Moonlight” Junmai Nigorizake

Celebrate a white Christmas with Yamatogawa Shuzo‘s cloudy sake (nigorizake). This sake has a thick, silky texture and is deliciously sweet, offset by well-balanced acidity. On the palate, it is reminiscent of strawberry mochi

Perhaps you’ll be starting the feast with some cheesy bites and mini sausage rolls? The creamy texture of Moonlight complements the fattiness of the baked or deep-fried finger foods, a guilty pleasure at the start of the meal.

Kenbishi “Chronometer” Junmai

An elegant blend of 2-8 year-old aged sake made from 100% Toku A Yamada Nishiki (the very best Yamada Nishiki from the very best rice fields) by Kenbishi. This junmai sake has a sherry-like flavour profile, with notes of bread, soy, chocolate, and dried fruits, with dryness at the finish.

It’s your best companion throughout the Christmas dinner, especially when it comes to the main dish: roast turkey with gravy. Chronometer boosts the juiciness of the meat while the nuttiness and umami stand up to the weightier flavours of gravy. It will also accompany any other roast meat (ham, beef) and barbecued vegetables like carrots and brussels sprouts. To make the experience more exciting, try warming it up to 35-55 °C (but you don’t have to, it’s delicious chilled too!).

Shirayuki Banzaimon Junmai Daiginjo Genshu

Treat yourself to one of the flagship sakes of brewery Konishi Shuzo. Expect fresh pineapple, melon, and delicate green apple on the nose, with a solid backbone of rice and umami on the palate, making it perfect for food pairing.

Shirayuki Banzaimon has the structure to pair wonderfully with pigs in blankets, with sake’s acidity cutting through the fattiness of the dish. Grilled meat and sausage in general would also make a delicious pairing. Also works perfectly with anything cheesy and creamy, such as cheese fondue.

Golden Amber

An aged sake (koshu) from Hayashi Honten that is beautifully golden in colour, spending eight years in an enamel tank and then a final four years in a virgin, charred American oak barrel. This results in a sake that is exceptionally well-balanced and smooth, with rich, deep flavours of vanilla, toffee, & sweet spices.

Best to end the meal by sipping the sake with some minced pies, Christmas pud or cheese board. The barrel-aged aromas of cinnamon and clove add an extra dimension to the flavours of the butter-rich pastry, while stacking up flavours of dried fruit and spices in the minced pies.
